We made each moment of our trysts
\nA sacred epiphany.
\nWe were alone in all the world.
\nLike a feather, but bolder,
\nYou tripped down the staircase, leading
\nMe dizzy through the lilac
\nTo your estates, through the mirror.<\/p>\n
\nWhen night came I received a gift;
\nThe altar gates did open,
\nAnd in dark, slowly aglow,
\nYour nakedness arched upwards.
\nAnd on awakening? “Be thou blessed”
\nI said, aware that my blessing
\nWas impertinent. While you slept,
\nFrom its stand the lilac stretched
\nTo touch you with its universe
\nOf blue; and your eyelids touched,
\nBecame calm, and your hand was warm.<\/p>\n
Rivers pulsed within the crystal,
\nMountains loomed and rivers roared.
\nAnd in your palm you held the orb
\nOf glass, and slept on a throne
\nAnd — God’s my witness — you were mine!<\/p>\n
You awoke, and made such changes
\nTo man’s common turn of phrase;
\nSpeech gained such harmonious force
\nAs throats allow, the word ‘thou’
\nAcquired the new meaning: ‘King.’<\/p>\n
Everything on earth was touched.
\nEven simple things — bowls, jugs –
\nWhen hard strata of water
\nStood between us, as on guard.<\/p>\n
we were taken who knows where:
\nCities built by miracles
\nWould melt like mirages,
\nMint was crushed beneath our feet
\nAnd birds accompanied us,
\nAnd fish leaped in the river,
\nThe skies parted as we watched . . . .<\/p>\n
When fate followed our footsteps
\nLike a madman with a knife.
